Program Overview
A graduate certificate in music history pedagogy prepares post-baccalaureate performers, educators, theorists, historians, composers, and other musicians to teach music history in a variety of educational settings. These credentials certify that students have acquired professional skills necessary to teach music history, making them more competitive on the job market. Non-matriculating students will usually complete a certificate within one academic year (two semesters). Matriculating master's students will usually distribute a certificate's four required courses (12 credits) evenly over two years of study, taking one course per semester.
- Prerequisite: Take the Graduate History Diagnostic Exam. Students who fail two or more sections of the exam must enroll in and pass MUSIC 593S: The History of Styles in Western Music.
- GPA requirement: Earn a grade of B (3.0) or higher in each course used toward a certificate.
- One pedagogy course: MUSIC 648 Music History Pedagogy.
- Two core courses (6 credits) from among the following:
- MUSIC 642: Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven
- MUSIC 643: 19th-Century Romanticism
- MUSIC 644: Music of the 20th Century
- MUSIC 645: History of Opera
- MUSIC 646: Music of the Renaissance
- MUSIC 647: Age of Bach and Handel
- MUSIC 693M: Minimalism
- MUSIC 693P: Post-Modern Music
- MUSIC 693S: Symphony in the 19th and 20th Centuries
- Other 600-level music history courses as approved by the Graduate Program Director.
- One teaching course: MUSIC 795B: Teaching Practicum
