Master of Arts Degree Program
Program of Study
A minimum of 33 credit hours is required for the M.A., distributed as follows:
- 12 credits in Comparative Literature
Students following the Translation and Interpreting Studies track are required to take Comparative Literature 751 (Theory and Practice of Translation) and Comparative Literature 681 (Introduction to Interpreting and Translation: Research and Practice I).
- 6 graduate credits in the first literature/field of concentration
- 6 credits in the second literature/field of concentration
- 3 elective credits
- 6 thesis/project credits.
Examinations
Candidates for the M.A. must pass an oral defense of their Masters Thesis/Project.
Thesis or Project
The Masters thesis is intended to demonstrate the candidate’s ability to formulate and explore a specific literary/theoretical problem. Alternatively, a student may elect to complete a final translation or interdisciplinary project. The prospectus for the thesis or project must be approved by the faculty supervisor and Graduate Program Director at least four months prior to the M.A. defense.
