Master of Arts Degree Program

Prerequisites for Admission

Admission to the M.A. is limited to University of Massachusetts Amherst Linguistics majors and other students with adequate preparation who are graduates of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke or Smith colleges, the other institutional members of the Five College consortium. Potential applicants for the M.A. program are urged to contact the Linguistics Department before applying, to determine if applications are currently being accepted. Graduate Record Exam scores are not required. The deadline for applications is June 15.

Program of Study

The program requires a total of 30 credits, of which at least 21 must be in the Linguistics Department and at least 12 at the 600 level or above. Each student’s curriculum is individually designed at the time of admission.

Thesis

No thesis is required.

Note: The M.A. and Ph.D. programs are separate tracks with different admissions criteria. Applicants interested in obtaining a Ph.D. should not apply to the M.A. program. An M.A. is not required for admission to the Ph.D. program.
