Program Overview
The Bilingual & Dual Language Education Graduate Certificate is ideal for an licensed teacher who is seeking a Bilingual Education Endorsement to better meet the needs of students in classrooms where more than one language is being spoken.
This certificate is designed to increase a teachers’ awareness of multilingual learners’ needs in both language and literacy development. The sources of evidence that ensure candidates are qualified as Bilingual and Dual Language teachers are the successful completion of courses and the development of a capstone assessment which is an inquiry-based curriculum unit.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Current core classroom teaching license in Massachusetts (Initial License at a minimum)
Completion: The certificate consists of 5 courses (15 credits) as follows:
- EDUC 749 Multilingualism & Society (3 credits). Online.
- EDUC 615S Language & Literacy Policy and Planning (3 credits). Online.
- EDUC 697W Special Topics- Critical Innovations in World & Second Language Curriculum Development (3 credits). Online.
- EDUC 615L Seminar in Cross-cultural Communication (3 credits). Online
Electives
- EDUC 698AP Field Experience (3 credits). Hybrid: online, with the exception of the 75 hours field-based experience.
- EDUC 687 Language Development and Literacy (3 credits) online
Requirements upon completion:

Candidates need to satisfy the partner language test requirement by achieving a passing score on the corresponding MTEL, or by passing the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) offered through the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Candidates need to satisfy 75-hours of a supervised field-based experience in a pre-K-12 dual language education, transitional bilingual education program, two-way immersion program, or another bilingual education setting for the EDUC 698AP course.
