Program Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Engineering Project Management and Leadership is designed to equip the STEM professional or current graduate student in a STEM discipline with the necessary skills and competencies to manage and lead engineering and technology-based projects. To earn the Certificate, students need to complete the following three courses (9 credits):

  • MIE 645:  Project Budgeting and Finance for Engineers
  • MIE 664:  Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship
  • MIE 670:  Technical Project Management

These three courses can be taken in any sequence since they each focus on different skills and do not build on each other.

Purpose

By completing the courses associated with this certificate, the STEM professional will gain the project management, leadership and financial skills necessary to undertake more responsibility and move into managerial roles in their organizations. The Certificate also offers preparation for industry recognized credentials such as Engineering Manager Professional certifications by the American Society for Engineering Management and Project Management certifications by the Project Management Institutes.

Admission and Eligibility Requirements

Current and non-matriculating (non-degree) students with STEM undergraduate degrees may apply for the Certificate. Non-matriculating students should have a sufficient technical background, as determined by the MSEM Program Director, to join the Certificate program. The Certificate is transitional. All 9 credits received as part of the Certificate can be counted towards the completion of the MSEM.

To enroll, students must be registered at UMass Amherst as a graduate student in a STEM discipline or as a non-degree graduate student. Please note that completion of the Certificate does not automatically qualify the student for the MSEM program and completion of the Certificate by a non-degree graduate student does not imply admission to the University in a specific academic program.

All courses associated with the Certificate will be taught each year, both on campus and online, allowing students to complete the Certificate in a timely fashion.

During the semester students are taking their final course for this Certificate, they should complete the Certificate Eligibility form and return it to Academic Advisor in MIE, Kevin Romani.
