Program Overview
The Multicultural Certificate in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences aims to provide both speech-language pathology (SLP) and audiology (AuD) students with advanced training and practice in working with individuals from culturally, linguistically, and otherwise diverse backgrounds. Students with proficiency in a language other than English may choose to focus on developing the knowledge and skills to provide services in that language. However, proficiency in a second language is not required to participate in the certificate. The goal of the certificate is to prepare clinicians from all backgrounds to provide culturally responsive services to clients whose identity may differ from their own across a variety of dimensions. Participation in the certificate does not add to the cost or length of the student’s program.
The certificate includes one course that is already part of the student’s program requirements (SLP: SLHS 615 Evaluation Processes with Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Populations; AuD: SLHS693P Public Health Audiology)
The certificate involves two additional courses, for a total of 6 credits:
- SLHS690M Multiculturalism in Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences (3 credits, Spring)*
- SLHS690Y Capstone seminar (3 credits across Fall and Spring)
*Note: If a student took SLHS490M Multiculturalism as an undergraduate student, they can register for a 3-credit independent study (SLHS696) with the instructor of 690M to complete the graduate-level assignments required for the certificate while also engaging in independent study of a topic of interest.
