UMA Undergraduate Guide 2012-2013 Art, Architecture, and Art History Academic Departments and Programs Art History The Courses
The Courses
(All courses carry 3 credits unless otherwise noted.) The 100-level courses are introductory surveys intended primarily for first-year students, although they may be taken at the sophomore level or above. The 300-level courses (ART-HIST 302-348) are the immediate continuation of the introductory courses for students at the sophomore level and above. They offer a more detailed survey of the art and architecture of a particular period. For most, a 100-level survey is a prerequisite. The Topical and Great Themes Courses (ART-HIST 381-385) offer the more advanced student the opportunity to explore select problems in greater detail. They require an art history course or equivalent experience in the area as prerequisite. Qualified undergraduates also may enroll in 700-level graduate seminars. These, as well as the Great Themes courses, vary from semester to semester; detailed descriptions are available in the Art History Office, 317B Bartlett. 100 Survey of Art: Ancient to Medieval (ATG) (4 cr) (1st sem) 110 Survey of Art: Renaissance to Modern (AT) (4 cr ) (2nd sem) 115 Introduction to the Visual Arts (ATG) (4 cr) (1st sem) 118 History of Architecture and the Built Environment (ATG) (4 cr) (2nd sem) 302 Evaluating Greek Art: Ancient Culture, Scientific Technology and Modern Politics (2nd sem) 303 Roman Art: Power, Politics and Society (1st sem) 305 Early Medieval Art (1st sem) 307 Romanesque and Gothic (2nd sem) 308 Medieval Painting 310 Art and the City-State in Early Renaissance Italy (1st sem) 313 High Renaissance Art and Mannerism in Italy (2nd sem) 314 Sexuality, Drama and Invention: The Baroque Artist in Italy 323 European Art 1780-1880 324 Modern Art 1880 to Present (1st sem) 326 Criticism of Modern Art 327 Contemporary Art (2nd sem) 328 American Art I (1st sem) 329 American Art II (2nd sem) 334 History of the Decorative Arts 342 19th-Century Architecture: Reform, History and Technology (1st sem) 343 20th-Century Architecture: Modernism, Capitalism and Globalism (2nd sem) 347 History of Islamic Art and Architecture I (1st sem alt yrs) 348 History of Islamic Art and Architecture II (1st sem alt yrs) 370 Junior Year Writing 381-5 Great Themes in Art History (both sem) 390A Museum Studies 390B Impressionism and Post-Impressionism 415 Museum Studies |
