The need for qualified interpreters and translators has grown dramatically in recent years. Both are needed in various agencies of the state and federal government, as well as hospitals and community health clinics, law offices, public service programs, industry, conference settings and government agencies. By far the largest staff of language specialists in the federal government is the Language Service Division of the Department of State. The FBI and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) both employ full-time interpreters and translators. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a critical need for trained interpreters and translators in legal, medical and social services related fields. Interpreters and translators also find employment with business and industries that have international operations or community groups serving immigrant populations.

Apart from full-time employment, job seekers can enhance their possibilities for employment by combining their interpreting and translation skills with another major or profession. These skills can be an asset in the job market for social and behavioural science and humanities majors, both undergraduate and graduate. They also combine well with programs in business, public health, nursing, legal studies, and communication.

Opportunities for employment will depend upon the particular language combination(s) that candidates have to offer, as well as their place of residence and willingness to travel. The market varies constantly, but many employment opportunities are currently available, and the field has gained increased recognition over the past several decades.
