UMA Undergraduate Guide 2019-2020 Academic Departments and Programs Civil and Environmental Engineering The Major
The MajorThe curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for the professional practice of civil engineering and for graduate study in the field. Graduates also learn the skills needed to maintain their state-of-the-art competency in the field throughout their careers. In the first three semesters, students take several courses in mathematics and the basic sciences and engineering, which prepare them for subsequent classes in which fundamental engineering principles are presented. These principles are then applied to the design of civil and environmental engineering facilities starting in the sophomore year. Students gain experience in engineering science and design in structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental and water resources engineering. The design experience culminates in the senior year with a Civil and Environmental Engineering Design course in which design fundamentals learned in earlier courses are integrated into a design project. Oral and written communication skills, the systems approach and an understanding of the responsibility of the engineer to society are emphasized throughout the curriculum, culminating in a professional practice seminar that integrates these concepts. RequirementsNo course taken on a pass/fail basis may be applied to General Education, major or PR-ENGIN requirements.
