UMA Undergraduate Guide 2019-2020 Academic Departments and Programs Judaic and Near Eastern Studies Middle Eastern Studies The Field
The FieldMiddle Eastern Studies at the University is a rigorous, interdisciplinary program that allows students considerable latitude in gaining knowledge of the contemporary Middle East and North Africa. We welcome students as Middle Eastern majors, secondary majors, and minors, and also offer a minor in Middle Eastern languages. After gaining an understanding of the basic issues of Middle Eastern history and societies, students may enroll in a wide range of upper-level courses offered throughout the Five Colleges. Fluency in a major Middle Eastern language, usually Arabic, is achieved through language classes in and outside of the Department. Students are also encouraged to study abroad in order to intensify the connection to Middle Eastern culture, language and society. The Middle Eastern Studies major allows students to acquire useful skills needed for diverse academic and professional opportunities after graduation. Many of our students have gone on to leading graduate programs, have won prestigious fellowships such as the Fulbright, and have found jobs in teaching, journalism, international relations, business, and non-profit organizations.
