The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program offers specialized English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses for credit. Both undergraduate and graduate students may enroll in our courses. In support of university internationalization, the program mission is to equip students who speak English as an additional language, across all levels and departments/programs, with the English language skills necessary to be successful in their other university classes. We accomplish this by teaching EAP courses which are based on measurable student learning outcomes and incorporate best practices, including student-centered learning environments, task-based language teaching methods, and innovative technologies.
To sign up for one of our courses, search SPIRE for "English as a Second Language". If no courses appear in your SPIRE search, our courses are likely full; please contact us directly at esl@umass.edu for information about waitlists.
We also offer walk-in tutoring for all students, faculty, and visiting scholars who learned English as an Additional Language. For hours and location, see www.umass.edu/esl/tutoring.
