The Major

Requirements

Students enrolled in Microbiology Fall 2019 or later must meet the following requirements:

Microbiology majors are required to complete a minimum of 35 credits within the Microbiology Department with at least a 2.0 grade point average. In addition, students must earn a C or higher in Microbio 311 to progress to required upper-level Microbiology courses. Students must earn a C or higher in Microbiology 312 to progress to upper-level laboratory courses.

The following MICROBIO courses are required:

  • 311 Foundations in Microbiology
  • 312 Microbiology Laboratory
  • 320 Infectious Disease and Defense
  • 330 Microbial Genetics
  • 360 Writing in Microbiology
  • 480 Microbial Physiology and Diversity
  • 494 Integrative Experience (3 credits required)
  • Two additional approved laboratory elective courses in Microbiology.

To complete the 35-credit minimum, take elective courses in Microbiology (numbered 300 or higher) and approved selected courses in Stockbridge School, Food Science, Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Biology and School of Public Health.

Undergraduates may apply 3 credits of approved non-course credits, e.g., Independent Study and Internship Practicum, toward the 35-credit requirement.

Note: Credits earned towards the required 35 credits of Microbiology courses must be numbered 300 or above.

Required Courses in Other Departments:

  • One semester each of Biochemistry (Biochem 420 or Biochem 423), Calculus  (Math 127 or Math 131) and either Calculus 2 (Math 128 or Math 132) or Statistics (Stats 240, Psych 240, or ResEcon 212)
  • Two semesters each of General Chemistry (Chem 111 and Chem 112), Introductory Biology(Bio 151, Bio 152), Introductory Physics (Phys 131 and Phys 132), and Organic Chemistry (Chem 261 and Chem 262).
  • Two lab courses corresponding with Introductory Biology and Organic Chemistry, Bio 153 and Chem 269.

Students enrolled in Microbiology prior to Fall 2019 must meet the same requirements as above, with the exception that a minimum of 27 credits of Microbiology courses numbered 300 or above with a 2.0 grade point average are required.
