Career Opportunities

Almost all professional philosophers are professors in colleges and universities. To prepare for this, one must earn a PhD. Even with a PhD, one’s prospects for a teaching position in a college or university are somewhat limited.

A philosophy major is excellent preparation for any vocation or professional school (law school, medical school, ...) that prizes clear thinking and analytical ability.
