The Majors

The mission of the College of Engineering at UMass Amherst is to provide a highest-quality, accessible engineering education that produces diverse, globally-aware and technically strong engineering practitioners and leaders, to conduct innovative research that advances knowledge and serves the economic needs of the Commonwealth, the nation and beyond, and to contribute to solving complex societal challenges.

College of Engineering majors are organized in five academic departments: Biomedical Engineering (bme.umass.edu); Chemical Engineering (che.umass.edu); Civil and Environmental Engineering (cee.umass.edu); Electrical and Computer Engineering (ece.umass.edu); and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (mie.umass.edu).

Engineering students have the opportunity to pursue minors in a number of other fields (e.g., mathematics, chemistry, physics). They can also apply for the Engineering Management minor offered by the Isenberg School of Management. Information about these minors can be found in the Academic Departments and Programs section of this Guide. Students are also encouraged to consult academic advisers in the corresponding programs of interest.

Accreditation

The College of Engineering offers six baccalaureate degree programs that are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org: Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Accreditation for our newest major, Biomedical Engineering, will be applied for immediately after the first class graduates in May 2021.
