The Major
The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for the professional practice of civil engineering and for graduate study in the field. Graduates also learn the skills needed to maintain their state-of-the-art proficiency in the field throughout their careers. In the first three semesters, students take courses in mathematics and the basic sciences and engineering, which prepare them for subsequent classes in which fundamental engineering principles are presented. These principles are then applied to the design of civil and environmental engineering facilities starting in the sophomore year. Students gain experience in engineering science and design in structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental and water resources engineering. The curriculum offers students the opportunity to participate in teams in the solution of major design experiences in several core areas. Students have to complete two design elective courses in combination with a professional practice seminar to satisfy the major design experience requirement. Oral and written communication skills, the systems approach and an understanding of the responsibility of the engineer to society are emphasized throughout the curriculum, culminating in a professional practice seminar that integrates these concepts.
