The Minor

Requirements

The Minor in Catalan studies consists of 15 credits of coursework (9 required and 6 elective) on the language and culture of Catalonia and the Catalan-speaking areas. None of these credits may be taken Pass/Fail, and a grade of C or better must be earned in each course. Up to 6 credits may be taken abroad with departmental approval.

Required (9 credits):

  • CATALAN 246A & CATALAN 246B – Intensive Intermediate Catalan I & II
  • CATALAN 315 – Catalan Culture

Electives (6 credits):

  • SPAN 320 – The Literatures, Communities, and Societies of Medieval and Early Modern Iberia (4 cr)
  • SPAN 321 – Cultural Conflicts and Modernity in the Literatures of Spain (4 cr)
  • SPAN 514 – Practicing Literary Translation: Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan (3 cr)
  • SPAN 415 – Culture and Civilization of Spain (4 cr)
  • SPAN 431 – Contemporary Theatre in Spain and Catalonia (3 cr)
  • SPAN 433 – Bad Lovers (3 cr)
  • SPAN 490STA – Iberian Soundscapes: Music, Lyrics, and Society (3 cr)
  • CATALAN / FILM-ST 590C – Catalan Film Festival (1 cr)
  • SPAN 597CF – Contemporary Catalan Fiction (3 cr)
  • Up to 6 credits may be taken abroad with departmental approval.

Other courses not listed here but with a significant component related to Catalan language and/or culture may qualify as electives.
