General Information

Students entering the Master’s and Doctor’s programs in Astronomy are expected to have a sound background in undergraduate physics. Previous training in astronomy is helpful but not required. Although the Graduate School Applicaiton Deadline is January 15th, The Department will give highest priority to applications received by December 15th. The plan of study consists of four semesters of graduate coursework covering foundational areas of astronomy which coincide with a two-year long initial research project.  Following advancement to Ph.D. candidacy, students undertake a long-form independent dissertation research project. Students graduate the program prepared for a wide range of career opportunities, both within and outside academia.
