The Major
The undergraduate major in Portuguese consists of 36 credits. None of these credits may be taken Pass/Fail, and a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher must be obtained in courses counted toward the major. Entering students who wish to major in Portuguese and are at the intermediate level are urged to take PORTUG 246, an intensive course that enables them to begin the major right away.
Requirements
I. Language Preparation: (6 credits)
PORT 230 Intermediate Portuguese I
PORT 240 Intermediate Portuguese II
or
PORT 246 Intensive Intermediate Portuguese
II. Advanced Language Preparation: (2 courses - minimum 6 credits)
Choose two from the following courses:
- PORT 301 Conversational Portuguese I
- PORT 302 Conversational Portuguese II
- PORT 305 Brazilian Portuguese Study
- PORT 306 European Portuguese Study
- PORT 311 Advanced Portuguese Grammar
- PORT 312 Advanced Composition
- PORT 470 General View of Portuguese Linguistics
III. Upper-level courses (6 courses - minimum of 18 credits)
- Take six more courses above 300 in consultation with your advisor.
- Two of these courses may be taken in language other than Portuguese (English, Spanish, etc) in areas related to the major. Courses taken outside of the department must be at the 300 level or above.
