Career Opportunities
Majors in Portuguese take courses in three areas of concentration: (i) professional uses of the language, (ii) language and linguistics, and (iii) cultural, historical and social studies of Portuguese-speaking populations in the US and abroad. These courses prepare students to use the Portuguese language in different types of careers in private business and industry, community-related services, federal government, education, health services, etc. The Portuguese major is extremely valuable for those interested in careers overseas or in multinational corporations in the US with branches in Brazil, Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa. Portuguese majors may pursue opportunities in translation, interpreting and teaching. Students can also develop research projects that lead to graduate education in linguistics, cultural studies, film and literary studies.
